Valentines Day Masacre

Posted on 14 February 2009

“V-Day” was the day when twenty two squadron members of the Hard Core Kayak Anglers Club stormed the beaches of the Dunedin Causeway for their monthly club trip. The mission was to find and catch the biggest redfish in a winner take all battle royale. At 0700 it looked like an all out invasion as we all launched from the shore into the crystal clear water. Many target fish were caught, photographed, and released. During the ambush of these redfish Rick would take the win with a 25.5″ specimen but, there were other fish that none of us were expecting in the area. Nik first spotted the tails and said “they were the size of brooms”. They were waiving their exposed tails through the air as they nosed around in the muddy shallows. Nik radioed some of the flotilla to assist because this was going to be an all out war. Spencer hooks up to the first one and then fire erupts. These aren’t redfish (red drum) that we are alll used to dealing with, these are black drum which are the tougher, meaner, bigger brothers of the reds seen earlier that morning. After a long hard battle Spencer takes the first one out. Nick is called into battle and he takes out two! Kyle the young gunner takes out another one. Russ finally steps in and takes the final successful shot. After it was all said and done, the HCKAC members successfully conquered the school with a total of five of big black drum detainees. After being interrogated and photographed for the use of their intelligence they were released unharmed and they retreated to their homeland in the Gulf of Mexico.
